What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are HTML elements placed in the <head> section of a web page that provide metadata about the page to search engines, social media platforms, and browsers. They don't appear on the page itself but control how the page is indexed, described in search results, and displayed when shared on social media.
The most important meta tags for SEO are the title tag (which appears as the clickable headline in search results), the meta description (the snippet below the title), and the canonical URL (which prevents duplicate content issues). For social sharing, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control the preview card that appears when your link is shared.
Open Graph vs Twitter Cards
Open Graph was created by Facebook and is used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, and many other platforms to generate rich link previews. The key tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url.
Twitter Cards are Twitter's equivalent. If you don't set Twitter-specific tags, Twitter will fall back to Open Graph tags. The main unique feature is the twitter:card tag which controls the card format: summary (small thumbnail) or summary_large_image (large banner image).
Meta Tags That Actually Matter for SEO
Title tag: The single most important on-page SEO element. Keep it under 60 characters. Include your primary keyword near the beginning.
Meta description: Doesn't directly affect ranking, but a compelling description improves click-through rate (which does). Keep it under 160 characters.
Canonical URL: Essential for sites with parameterized URLs, pagination, or content syndication. Tells Google which URL to index.
Robots: Controls indexing. Use noindex for staging pages, login pages, and internal tools.
Viewport: Required for mobile-responsive pages. Google uses mobile-first indexing, so this is non-negotiable.
